This weekend we celebrated Pentecost on the Christian calendar. Lots of churches were giving a historical lesson of something that happened long ago. But today many of us doubt if God still works the way he did, or if he does it certainly wouldn’t be through me.

There’s an interesting story back in 1 Samuel 19. David is running for his life from King Saul. David goes to hide out with a bunch of prophets. And as Saul goes there to find David and kill him, he gets so overwhelmed with the presence and spirit of God that he becomes incapacitated.

It says he gets so overwhelmed he begins “prophesying” (probably what we would call “speaking in tongues” today), and he strips off his clothes (probably down to his “underwear”), and he lies on the ground all day and all night, giving David time to escape. And this happened while his sole purpose in coming there was to murder David!

And we think God can’t flow through us to accomplish his purposes? I can’t count how many times I’ve said, I’m not worthy, or I’m not good enough to let God use me. I’m too scared of looking the fool or losing control, or I just doubt that God would want to use someone like me.

And then I remember this story and remind myself that no matter how poorly I think of myself, God can overwhelm me with his Spirit. If he can fall on someone with murder in his heart, surely he can flow through me to accomplish his purposes however big or small.
